Contrary to popular belief, there are A LOT of misconceptions and/or misinformation surrounding Christianity. This causes a perpetual cycle of spreading misinformation until most people are convinced they’re facts. Let’s dispel a few of these misconceptions right now.
Christians can’t wear mixed fabrics.
The passage most people reference is when the Bible talks about not mixing fabrics. This prohibition was only for wool and linen. Even if a Christian owned wool and linen (which is very uncommon today) it still wouldn’t be a sin. This prohibition was for ancient Israel, not for the New Testament Christian. The ceremonial laws for ancient Israel was recorded in the Old Testament under the Old Covenant and do not apply today. If you’re a Gentile New Covenant Christian living in an American Republic or anywhere else outside of Israel, these laws do not apply to you. These laws were for the Jews living under a Theocracy to separate them the nations around them.
Christians can’t eat pork, shellfish, etc.
Leviticus chapter 11 lists the dietary restrictions God gave to the nation of Israel. The dietary laws included prohibitions against eating pork, shrimp, shellfish and many types of seafood, most insects, scavenger birds, and various other animals. Again, these dietary rules were never intended to apply to anyone other than the Israelites Jews living under a Theocracy. The purpose of the food laws was to make the Israelites distinct from all other nations. After this purpose had ended, Jesus declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19). When Jesus died on the cross, He fulfilled the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:24-26; Ephesians 2:15). This includes the laws regarding clean and unclean foods.
Christians can’t judge.
The Bible isn’t against Christians judging. The Bible is against hypocritical judgment. In John 7:24, Jesus says, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” 1 Corinthians 2:15 says, “But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.” Matthew 7:1-5 says, “First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Christians are called to first remove the sin out of their own lives and then they will be able to help get the sin out of someone else’s life. If you’re telling someone to stop lying, but you continue to lie yourself, you’re being a hypocrite and Jesus is against hypocritical judgment. Christian can judge righteously from the Bible, but only God is able to condemn. Matthew 7:15-20 tells us that we’ll know a person by the fruit they produce in their lives. It’s our responsibility as Christians to expose sin and help sinners come to Christ Who can help get the sin out of their lives.
